Permascand’s know-how is part of the green transition

Permascand’s business in the field of water purification technology continues to grow. In September 2019, Permascand proudly won the largest order in its history, valued at more than 223 million SEK (Swedish Kronor).

“It’s great fun that our investments are so timely,” says Peter Lundström, CEO. “Especially as the purpose of ballast water purification has a clear environmental focus by preventing organisms from spreading from their natural propagation areas and therefore threatening the biodiversity of the oceans.

“We see this as an important step on the road towards the green change that the world is embracing. Permascand’s vision is to become the number one global independent provider of electrochemical solutions for green technologies.”

In line with that, Permascand’s electrowinning technology is one of the foundations for efficient copper and nickel extraction, a method that reduces our customers’ energy consumption by 10%. Additionally, the company has recently launched a new brand, Norscand®, an electrochemical cell used in the extraction of lithium – an important component of batteries for electric cars, amongst other things. As pioneers of DSA technology, Permascand has also enabled customers to replace lead and graphite with titanium anodes.

“We calculated how much of the world’s energy consumption has decreased thanks to our electrochemical coatings,” explains Peter Lundström. “Since 1971, it corresponds to Sweden’s total electricity consumption for one year.”

At the end of September, Permascand also passed its previous year’s sales record with a total of 323 million SEK in sales.

“We have prepared for large volumes of production and continue to grow by 50% annually,” explains Peter Lundström. “Now we are approaching a turnover of half a billion.”

In the production units in Ljungaverk, large investments have been made based on modern technology and functionality. Continued development of the business involves, among other things, competence development, optimization of processes to reduce emissions and material consumption.

“For every day that we bill, we now set sales records,” says Peter Lundström.

Continuing our journey, investing for the future, Permascand is proud to do the first installation of a fully automated robot welder for Spotwelding at the site in Ljungaverk.

“To meet the needs and requirements from our customers, we have today pushed the button and started one of our new investments – a fully automated robot spot welder, says Peter Lundström CEO at Permascand.

Jörgen Linell, Operations Director at Permascand continues, this will enable flexibility for new products and shorter convention times in our production.

The project has been led by Jörgen Wiklander and full engagement from the team is visible in attached video produced by Andreas Bergströmduring training and testing of the robot at the supplier in Karlstad.

Our investment plan for 2019- 2021 will put Permascand in a great high-tech position for future growth. This is just the start explains the chairman of the board Per-Ola Baalerud from Norvestor.

Record year for Permascand

Record year for Permascand

Permascand took half a billion in orders during the first ten months of the year, making 2018 a record year.

“We have a bright future ahead of us,” says CEO Peter Lundström. “Electrochemistry is in many ways one of the solutions to the world’s environmental problems.”

“Permascand has always been a company with potential,” says CEO Peter Lundström. “This autumn we have proven that we can also step up and deliver top results.”

Nearly three years ago Permascand had a reboot: new owners, a new CEO, and a reorganization focusing on their core business: catalytic coatings. Today, the 50-year-old exporter can proudly look to the future.

“Permascand has always been a company with potential,” says CEO Peter Lundström. “This autumn we have proven that we can also step up and deliver top results.”

In October 2018, Permascand posted an order intake of 500 million for the period January to October, three times as much they saw in the same period last year.

“It’s great fun,” Peter continues with a proud smile. “All of our employees do a very good job, despite the impact that growth has on the teams.”

Just this year, the company has employed eleven new employees. A completely new water treatment system was established in June, and major investments in the machinery park have made for better efficiency.

“It’s like a construction site where the tempo is increasing all the time,” Lundström says. “But we will not relax. Every new development pushes us further.”

Permascand was founded in Ljungaverk in 1971. Then, as now, the focus was electrochemistry; electrical voltage and chemical substances create different reactions that the company then sells as coatings, in various applications, and as packaged products on the industrial world market.

Over the years, the business has evolved from a facility with qualified welding to a company featuring cutting edge technology production and innovation.

“We now have a clear concept and strategy that focuses on power and ability,” explains Peter. “We’ve always had the professional knowledge – what we need now is to get our many individual stars to play together as a team.”

Starting in 2015, Permascand has been owned by the Norwegian venture capital company Norvestor. A professional board has brought experience and knowledge from companies that have made similar development trips.

“Norvestor saw the strength in our catalytic coatings being applied in many different contexts,” explains Peter. “Among other things, they saw great business opportunities in our electrochemical cells for water purification, based on the Ballast Convention, which was about to be adopted.”

The purpose of the International Ballast Water Convention is to prevent organisms from spreading from their natural widespread areas and threatening the biodiversity of the oceans. Permascand’s electrochemical cell for water purification is certified and meets international requirements. The market has great potential because the total fleet in the world consists of approximately 45,000 vessels that need to ensure that they comply with the rules. In addition, between 1 000 – 2 500 new ships are being built each year.

“It feels great that our products are a piece in the puzzle in the effort to ensure and improve the environment in the world’s ocean. And our new facility is a modern and safe world-class work environment.”

But it is not only the water treatment department that is successful. The whole company is experiencing positive development and many new customers. Among other things, a large Canadian lithium producer has bought a special electrochemical cell that Permascand developed with partner Noram.

“Lithium is what is used in, for example, batteries found in Tesla’s electric cars, this is an exciting market to involved in.”

Expertise is a key issue when it comes to growth. For Permascand’s part, it is about both the possibility of recruiting new employees and for suppliers to meet the new conditions.

“For us to succeed, our suppliers need to join us on our journey,” explains Peter. “For example, the new requirements of our customers have a proven production chain. In particular, the US market places different requirements for documentation of the process through, among other things, test and inspection plans, where each moment in the process is documented and, in some cases, also photographed.”

“If you want to become a world champion, you need a clear focus. You need to know what to do to reach the goal and do activities that take you forward. At the same time, it is a development staircase that goes up and down. But it is important to hold on and be clear in communication.”

Permascand will soon have a new HR manager in place to ensure a strong supply of skilled employees. The focus is on developing talent, working with succession planning, and skills development. Even though automation is increasing at Permascand, the need for competent employees remains.

“Licensed welders, engineers, and technical sales will continue to be important to us. And today, when every employee is his own brand, employees can really build their CV at Permascand.”

Peter also knows that a job at Permascand can be a lifestyle question rather than a career choice. When it comes to quality of life and proximity to people and nature the Ånge municipality can be challenging. Despite this, there is a high level of loyalty among the staff.

“The municipality needs to better highlight its benefits,” said Peter.

“We all have to take responsibility for and act on our own development, both as individuals as well as companies and municipalities. It doesn’t work if you’re not doing things yourself. At Permascand we encourage trying new things. When someone thinks they can, it is in itself a major driver for change and development.”

As CEO of Permascand, Peter sits in the Ånge municipality’s business councils meeting several times a year. On the question of what he can contribute there, the answer comes directly: change processes.

“If you want to become a world champion, you need a clear focus. You need to know what to do to reach the goal and do activities that take you forward. At the same time, it is a development staircase that goes up and down. But it is important to hold on and be clear in communication.”

And right now, all signs are pointing towards continued growth for the successful Ljungaverk company. The conscious and focused work has yielded results and it will continue on the same path: professionally packaged electrochemical solutions for customers who in turn provide recurring business. In addition, the company wants the best working environment and the best production conditions.

“But of course, it’s the people who make the crucial difference. Every employee is vital,” says Peter. “Everyone is focused on our future success.”

“Permascand is an engine for the municipality. This venture on Water Treatment Systems shows the way for other companies, and attracts skills.”

Annelie Axelsson, Corporate Responsible Ånge Municipality

Permascand has been developing the water purification technology since 2001. Many experienced and qualified employees have made this successful development journey together. When the new assembly line opened under festive forms in June 2018, it ensured high levels of competence and high quality in production. As an example all cells are pressure tested with recycled water in a closed system.

“We have invested heavily in a modern, safe, and world class working environment that also embrace our core values ‘Right from us to you’ and ‘Safety starts with me’,” says Lars Nyman. “The workshop has been refurbished into a bright and visually appealing workplace where we currently have a production flow of up to eight cells per shift – or 2000 per year.”

“Permascand is a big and impressive company. As a supplier, we hope that they will grow even bigger and broaden their markets.”
